Shawnee police deserve better

I’m writing in response to the Sept. 24 article, “Shawnee Twp. Police levy renewal falls ‘through the cracks.’”

I understand we have had a very unprecedented year, things have been in turmoil and people have been scared to come out of their homes. We, in Shawnee Township, have an amazing police depapartment. Even with Covid-19, they have been on the job. They have gone to the wrecks, the domestic violence calls, the fire calls, the elderly check-up calls and everything in between. The Shawnee police have put themselves out there when everyone else walks away.

My question: Why should they be the ones to take the cuts in their department? Why should they be the ones worried about what cuts are going to happen? We are living in a country that you hear crying about defunding the police departments and now we have a $647,000 cut in our police department due to “a collective mistake.”

I have to question the motives of everyone involved in seeing to it that these renewals are put on the ballot. We need answers. In my opinion, our department deserved a raise, not a cut. I have lived in Shawnee for close to 50 years. We have always had an amazing police department, but now I am concerned that this cut is going to affect the manpower and safety of our community.

If the Allen County Sheriff’s Department has to pick up the slack, what will be the response time going forward. I, for one, am so disappointed with this “collective mistake.” I feel more people in the community should start going to the board meetings, when allowable, and get involved. No one in the administration forgot to pick their paychecks up.
