Letter: Putnam County Hospice grateful for volunteers

During National Volunteer Week, April 21-27, Putnam County Hospice is recognizing our 36 dedicated volunteers from our community who bring compassion, support and friendship to our patients and their families as they navigate a life-limiting illness.

Hospice volunteers help the people they serve live every moment of life to the fullest by offering companionship to the patient as well as providing respite to the caregivers. Additionally, hospice volunteers offer assistance with clerical projects, special events and fundraising efforts. Last year, our team of volunteers provided more than 500 hours of service to our patients, spent nearly 100 hours working on clerical projects and drove more than 4,500 miles. New volunteers received 12 hours of volunteer training, and the entire group attended our yearly hospice education in-service.

Hospice volunteering is not just hard work; it’s a work of heart. Hospice volunteers accompany those who have reached the end of their earthly journey. They listen when words have lost meaning, but a smile has not.

Putnam County Hospice is extremely grateful for our hospice volunteers. This celebration reminds everyone that hospice volunteers are trained, caring, and unique individuals who are truly “angels among us.”
