Letter: Think green, think China

In 2016 Department of Energy assistant Secretary Charles McConnell of the Obama administration stated the following: “All of the US annual emissions in 2025 will be offset by three weeks of Chinese emissions. Three weeks!”

We know that China is building hundreds of coal burning power plants. At the same time, we are converting coal burning power plants to natural gas and dramatically reducing emissions. In fact, we lead all developed nations in reducing emissions.

Have our reduced emissions decreased West coast fires? Has Canada’s wooded coast recorded excessive fires this year? Have our reduced emissions stopped storms from spinning off of Africa toward the USA?

Do we think the New Green Deal will fix global climate change for us? Or, will we destroy our economy simply to help the Chinese manufacture more of the things we require? Who or what is behind this thinking?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with helping to clean our environment, but we as a nation, have our limits. If no one lived in the United States, there would still be hurricanes, flooding, and other natural disasters. The Pacific Ocean, that helps control our weather, would still cause droughts and lightning would still cause wild fires. Nothing that we have done can change this reality, and neither will the rhetoric of our politicians.
