Letter: Professor: Go back to school

Albert Gabel, professor emeritus’ of The Ohio State University, is completely wrong. Removing the electoral college could easily lead to cheating, not the other way around.

A simple example would be for a state like California to let non-citizens, “dead” citizens, etc. to vote in an election, thus inflating the real numbers. A party could “steal” an election if we simply went by the “popular” vote. Under the electoral college system California could only cheat the state of California … not South Dakota, Ohio or any other state.

There have been several situations throughout America’s history where the electoral college has eliminated regionalism. A candidate could be an overwhelming choice in a region but would not be nearly as popular across the country. For this reason candidates need to have a broader appeal.

I suggest Mr. Gabel go online and look up Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, Michigan. Hillsdale College offers free online classes covering The Declaration of Independence, The Constitution, The Branches of Government, The Electoral College, etc.. Enjoy your continuing education experience!
