Albert Gabel, professor emeritus’ of The Ohio State University, is completely wrong. Removing the electoral college could easily lead to cheating, not the other way around.
A simple example would be for a state like California to let non-citizens, “dead” citizens, etc. to vote in an election, thus inflating the real numbers. A party could “steal” an election if we simply went by the “popular” vote. Under the electoral college system California could only cheat the state of California … not South Dakota, Ohio or any other state.
There have been several situations throughout America’s history where the electoral college has eliminated regionalism. A candidate could be an overwhelming choice in a region but would not be nearly as popular across the country. For this reason candidates need to have a broader appeal.
