I read with interest the Oct. 29 story in The Lima News concerning the new medical education building being erected on the corner of West Market Street and Collett Street.
Thanks to Mercy Health/St. Rita’s for reviving the internship/residency program that hopefully will combat the predicted physician shortage from coming to this area in the near future.
On behalf of all the physicians and nurses who were educated and trained at both hospitals in the mid-50s, we want to inform state Rep. Bob Cupp this is not new for Lima. We did this years ago.
From the 1940s until the the early 1970s, both hospitals had education programs. Physicians came from Ohio State, Indiana University and the University of Michigan and trained in family practice, internal medicine and surgery. Many stayed in the area for 30 to 40 years. Some even found a special nurse to be their wives. Several became president of the State of Ohio Medical Board. One in particular, Dr. Gene E. Wright, started the West Central Ohio Health Partners, which serves the underserved in Lima as well as the area.
Our emergency rooms were manned by physicians on a rotation basis until emergency physicians were hired for the job.
We are happy to see this program being revived. It will draw many young people to the area and hopefully some will make Lima their home for many years.
