Letter: President must be held accountable

In federal appeals court, President Trump’s lawyers actually argued that if he pulled a gun out on Manhattan’s 5th Avenue and started shooting people, the police would not be allowed to restrain or investigate him. Think about that. Their argument means that a sitting president not only can’t be indicted, he also has legal immunity to break the law in plain sight without any repercussions. In effect, the president is like a divine right king or a dictator, legally untouchable, as long as he holds the office.

This argument was made on Oct. 23, 2019, before the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on behalf of our current president. We have been here before: “When the President does it, that means it’s not a crime,” Richard M. Nixon said on May 1, 1977. It was wrong then, and it’s wrong now.
