I had the privilege to accompany three Upper Scioto Valley Ohio Hi-Point teams and their advisor, Dustin Price, to the Skills Knowledge Bowl State Competition, which included vocational schools statewide.
USV competed in three divisions, achieving two first-place awards (grades 7-8, 9-10) and one second-place award (grades 11-12).
This educational and social adventure for 26 USV students is part of Career-Based Intervention classes (CBI), a satellite program of Ohio Hi-Point Vocational Career Center. To compete educationally, team members study language arts, math, science, history, geography and other topics and accumulate scores based on correct answers to question over these topics. However, socially, this activity that took place in Columbus, offers students the sites of an urban setting and a networking opportunity with like-minded students who value learning in a safe, competitive environment.
These USV students had this experience thanks to Ohio Hi-Point and the efforts of their teacher and this is just one of many opportunities that OHP offers both on their campus and in satellite programs. On May 8, Ohio Hi-Point is asking voters to approve a permanent improvement levy for the first time in the school’s 44 year history. This levy is a small price to pay for the continuation of such worthwhile programs for our students.
