Letter: We knew better, but were scammed

My husband and I contracted with a company who advertised they had 30 years of experience in foundation work. Unfortunately, we did not check with the Better Business Bureau or check references.

We paid for half of the work up front. We knew not to pay the balance upon completion of this project but the contractor was leaving for Florida, and needed to be paid before he left. He stated that upon returning from the trip, he would not only finish the job but a walk through would be done, which did not happen.

Not only was the work incomplete but what little was done, was done incorrectly. Not only do we have the same existing problems but the house has additional settling caused by the inferior work.

Later we learned that several people who used this same contractor were also left with inferior work and lost all of their money they gave to the contractor.

I called the contractor many times but he did not call me back. He did leave us a message saying he was leaving for Florida, and promised to come over upon his return. As usual, he did not show up. My husband passed away feeling the weight of the world because someone deceived and lied to him. He placed his trust in this person, gave him the money for this job, only to find out that the contractor was a fraud who had no intention of fixing the problems in the home. I have contacted a reputable contractor who gave me a quote for the cost of fixing the problem. The cost would be the same amount I paid to the original contractor.

Since this happened, the contractor we used has filed bankruptcy. This contractor has started a new business under a different name and phone number, stating 30 plus years of experience. Please beware!
