Letter: Issue 1 was a waste of money, effort

I am a graduate of public schools, so my math skills are not sharp enough to figure out the calculations on Issue 1. If you were afraid the abortion amendment would get more than 50 percent of the vote what made you think you would get more than 50 percent on what amounted to a mirror image issue.

Imagine if just the money spent on the election were spent on child support enforcement, parenting classes, help for unwed mothers or heaven forbid public schools. It certainly would have prevented more abortions. The money spent on the election would fund the average public school district for at least 2 years. It would run the largest high school in the state for a year. Add to that (shock and surprise) money from out-of-state sources on both sides for the campaign.

Don’t be so surprised that Issue 1 failed. Maybe people don’t trust the General Assembly with more power when we recently convicted the former house speaker of bribery. Some people are paying attention.

All of the advertising for “Yes” was about everything except the abortion issue. A little honesty goes a long way too.

Just for the record I’m probably the only one in the state voting “No” on both issues.
