Letter: August Issue 1: Issue limits power of voters

I urge you to vote no on Issue 1. If this constitutional change passes, it will raise the percentage of the vote needed to change the state constitution to 60%. This dangerous move would solidify virtually all constitutional changes to the state legislature, where, funny enough, they’ll only still need 50 plus one.

Currently, the Constitution can be amended with a simple majority. But under Issue 1, the threshold would be raised to a two-thirds supermajority. This means that even if a majority of voters support a change to the Constitution, it could still fail if it doesn’t meet the supermajority requirement.

This would greatly limit the power of citizens to make necessary changes to the Constitution. It could also lead to gridlock and endless debates within the legislature, as a small minority could block any proposed amendments.

Furthermore, this change would benefit special interest groups and lobbyists who already have an undue influence on our government. They would have an easier time blocking citizen-led initiatives, making it even harder for the majority of people to have their voices heard.

In short, voting no on Issue 1 is the only way to preserve the power of the people and prevent the concentration of power among lawmakers and special interest groups. Please take this seriously and vote against Issue 1 on Election Day.
