Letter: August Issue 1: Don’t fall for the power grab

Issue 1 takes power away from the people! With the Aug. 8 special election quickly approaching, it is important for all Ohio voters to understand this issue.

Issue 1 would reverse majority rule in Ohio by requiring citizen-led initiatives to pass at a supermajority of 60% instead of the current 50.1%. Issue one will also change requirements, making it nearly impossible for citizens to get an initiative on the ballot in the first place. Citizen initiatives are so important because they are a way for Ohio voters to directly affect our state and make our voices heard. Some state legislators are afraid of Ohioans’ voices and want to maintain their power and control by making it harder for our voices to be heard and harder for us to affect change.

As a citizen, woman and business owner in Ohio, I am deeply opposed to any issue that will diminish my voice and my vote! This special election issue is bigger than a particular political party or current concern. Ohio voters from all political parties or no political party should be alarmed that their voices and power will be diminished if issue one passes.

I hope that Ohio voters are paying attention and won’t let them get away with this power grab. Your power, voice and vote are valuable! Don’t give them up for or any issue! Vote NO on issue 1!
