Letter: Issue 1 keeps Ohio from being like California

I look at Issue 1 with wariness. I traveled to California in my job on and off for years. That state is unmanageable, mainly because of mob rule.

There are up to 50 ballot measures at each election. A simple one-vote majority decides. This begs a question. Why have a legislature or a governor if you’re going to conduct state business this way? Sometimes the legislature and the governor have to do things that are not popular with the public but are necessary, whether it be raising taxes or cutting services.

Most of California’s regulations that have caused their housing crisis are due to ballot measures installing stifling regulations.

I know this argument is an extension of the abortion wars. I tell women they can make any laws they want. Enforcing them and having the state detain and incarcerate you for having an abortion is a whole other matter altogether. So don’t throw the baby out with the bath water.

I vote for a representative to do a job. We shouldn’t have mob rule. Sixty percent of the public voting to overturn the will of the state government is not being unreasonable. It makes them relevant.
