Letter: Take two minutes more to save a life

On Nov. 3, 2021, my son, Patrick Archer, was killed at Lima Ford Engine Plant. He is survived by his wife, four children, two stepsons, his mother, brother and sister.

On April 28, the Organization of United Support and Memorial for Workplace Fatalities will be meeting in Washington, D.C., to bring awareness to workplace fatalities. Every day, over 15 families get “that” call. Patrick’s wife and children will be in attendance. On the 27th of April, there will be a wreath-laying ceremony, and my grandchildren will be presenting the wreath in memory for all the kids who have lost their dads or moms, and especially for their Dad.

In memory of my son, I am urging employers and employees to stop and take two minutes to double-check. Don’t assume, don’t wait and don’t be compliant. The safety of your employees should be first and foremost in your industry.

Employers, your employees are not just a number. They have a face, a name and a family. Take responsibility and accountability. Don’t leave a family totally heartbroken because you couldn’t take two minutes.
