Letter: VFW needs more younger members

In response to Grace Woolley’s letter, “Someone should step up for honors at funerals,” I wish to express my sincere sympathy for the loss of your brother and sincerely thank him for his service.

Yes, the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ members are aging. Was your brother a member? Many young veterans are not joining these organizations, which is exactly why these types of honors are getting harder to come by at funeral services. If your brother was a member, were veteran friends of his also members?

The VFW desperately needs younger veterans to join to help keep these services available. My dad was a World War II veteran and a proud lifetime member of the VFW. At his funeral, the men who played “Taps” and performed the 21-gun salute were all close to his age. I’m simply saying that the need for younger veterans is much needed.
