Letter: Time to support Social Security Fairness Act

They put their lives on the line daily and deserve full benefits; they earned it!

We stand and applaud, provide recognition and thank them, yet our government blocks these heroes of full benefits. That is wrong. Law enforcement officers are not permitted to receive their full Social Security benefits due to public pensions.

Yes, elected officials, administrators and directors are even permitted to retire and retain their positions for more money in state pensions, but not law enforcement.

Retirees or spouses are entitled to only one-third of their monthly benefits. The Social Security Fairness Act was successful in committee in the 117th Congress and should be brought to the floor in the 118th Congress, passed unanimously with bipartisan support in the House and Senate and signed by the president.

Comparably, Congress votes on its own wages and medical coverage, and their widows/widowers receive full benefits of the elected loved one until they pass too. Aren’t families who sacrifice holidays, emotions, time spent with loved ones and maybe the ultimate sacrifice worth it too? Stress of a law enforcement career contributes greatly to a decrease in an officer’s life expectancy; it did with my father’s passing at just 64, two days past my 22nd birthday.

Government excuses are always presented to block modifications, yet these men and women protect and serve without providing excuses. However, unbelievable ease of qualifying opportunities for receiving benefits, alongside rampant fraud of the system, are issues worth in-depth investigations.

How about that “borrowed money” from the Social Security program? Pay it back.

Call your U.S. representative and senators today! Law enorcement deserves to be paid in full.
