Letter: Stop giving criminals a slap on the wrist

I am wondering why so many people charged with crimes are very often let off their sentences.

To me, this encourages more crime. People often say that Lima criminals get let off, and the criminals know it is true, so committing crimes does not divert many.

Something needs to be done to change this.

I was in a case, and it seemed the prosecutor almost wants you to drop the charges filed, and I am not sure why. We need to change and to stop this.

There are so many repeat offenders out there. A person I know always gets let off and keeps up his criminal activity with 27 priors.

Courts do send messages to people out there. Send a strong meassage to criminals that you do not get off so easily for crimes you commit. Build more jails or something because what goes on is not helping with crime, and many feel they will get a pass on crimes. Change is what we need, not a wrist-slap for criminals. Look at the weekly court records; almost all the time is suspended and a fine imposed.
