Letter: Chief Cortes deserves community backing

In a recent report before Lima council, Lima Police Chief Angel Cortes spoke about positive initiatives. He outlined a realistic and thoughtful plan to improve public safety.

Chief Cortes seeks to strengthen community-oriented policing by assigning a specific officer to a specific neighborhood. This wise use of limited financial resources will likely improve both law enforcement/community communications and public safety.

Open communication with citizens encourages an atmosphere conducive to problem-solving and building trust. The policy of seeking alternatives to racial disparities in neighborhood policing patrols can be of benefit to the entire community. As law enforcement and community members get to know each other, crime prevention and diffusion of crisis situations can result.

Lima-Allen County Neighborhoods In Partnership is a network of volunteer-based neighborhood associations and others advocating for improving the quality of life in the neighborhoods and encouraging personal responsibility.
