Rush Limbaugh died the other day. In the comments sections, his faithful listeners defended the man against those saying good riddance (de mortuis nil nisi bonum?) and spoke in glowing terms of his “legacy.”
What exactly is that legacy?
Do you recall back in 2015 Donald Trump at a rally mocking a disabled reporter, the New York Times’ Serge Kovaleski (who suffered from arthrogryposis), by mimicking his spastic movements? Where did Trump get the inspiration for that act of mockery?
In 2006, Michael J. Fox appeared in a campaign commercial for a Democratic politician. On his radio show, which was also videotaped, Rush Limbaugh claimed that in the commercial Fox was deliberately exaggerating his Parkinsons’ symptoms for sympathy. Like Trump, Limbaugh imitated Fox’s spastic movements while he excoriated him.
Trump, in his act of mockery, was obviously taking his cue from Rush Limbaugh.
There you have Rush Limbaugh’s true legacy: Cruel mockery of the disabled.
No wonder Trump awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
