Mark Figley, in his Jan. 26 column in The Lima News, voiced his grievance that social media platforms refusing to enable the dissemination of lies, as fact, are abridging the right of free speech, though such speech violates their free-enterprise policies against “risk of further incitement of violence.”
Instead of “standing for an unpopular truth,” Father Mark Hodges, by virtue of his collar at the nation’s capital on Jan. 6, was allowing the perception of sacred endorsement and virtue to the Big Lie—that the election was stolen from Trump. To equate the reverand’s plight — one who made his bed and must now lie in it — to those in sanctuary fearing for their families’ lives due to gang violence etc., is a pathetic manipulation of sentiment.
Note: “The Big Lie” was a term coined in Nazi Germany. “If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it,” Joseph Goebbels, Reich minister of propaganda of Nazi Germany, once said.
Republicans have long espoused their devotion to good character & responsible behavior as their party’s trademark. Nowadays, Figley shares the party’s current predominant voice for avoiding accountability and wishing to sweep Trump’s and his enablers’ misdeeds under the rug.
