Veterans from across Ohio are extremely disappointed with departing Senate President Larry Obhof. Despite initial assurances that he was supportive of efforts to modernize our non-profit charitable bingo activities, in the end, he refused to bring Senate Bill 194 to vote in the legislature’s closing days.
The ramifications are very real: potential closing of posts and a downturn in charitable efforts and support for veteran heroes, their families and communities.
While we are disappointed, we did see many positives. We’re thankful for the overwhelming bipartisan support in the Ohio House. House Speaker Bob Cupp showed great support, as did Attorney General Dave Yost. The VFW, American Legion and AMVETS thank them for their support.
Despite this loss, it’s important to focus on what’s ahead. Ohio’s veterans have been through much, but like their time in the military, they see through every mission — including this one. We look forward to working with Senate President Matt Huffman, Speaker Cupp, Governor DeWine, Attorney General Yost and Ohio’s legislators to finally getting this vitally important legislation across the finish line. We never gave up on defending America when we were called to duty, and we will not be giving up on supporting our veterans in need, their families and our communities!
We urge new Senate President Matt Huffman to support Ohio’s veterans and the hundreds of local charities they help fund by supporting legislation to modernize charitable gaming at our posts.
