Letter: True heroes on Halloween

In this time of uncertainty, we need heroes. Yes, heroes come in all shapes, forms and colors. They even come in many different types of uniforms.

Let me tell you of a group of real-life heroes that I saw on Halloween. One of hem was named Lt. Andy Follas of the American Township Fire Department. He drove a fire truck into our neighborhood and got out with his COVID-19 mask on and began to greet all the children who were out trick-or-treating with a smile in his eyes and a bag of candy. I watched as the Batmen, clowns and princesses all came to the fire truck for candy and a chance to say hello to the firemen.

This was the day a true hero came to Plainfield Drive because our children and grandchildren have been home bound by fear and have had little interaction with friends. To see them smiling and laughing and being kids again was a real blessing.

I just want to thank Capt. Keith Hadding and Lt. Andy Follas for being true heroes. God bless the American Township Fire Department.
