Letter: Cruel to be kind

Friday was a red-letter day in America. We set the record for most coronavirus infections in a single day, 83,757 — blowing away the previous record by almost ten grand. Ohio was among those states setting a new PR as well. Something to be proud of.

I continue to read in the comments section of The Lima News people asserting that the pandemic is a fraud, that the coronavirus is no big deal, that Anthony Fauci is a fear-monger, that masks don’t work, and so on. Roughly a third of Americans are ignoring CDC recommendations for keeping oneself and others safe from the virus, and at least that many are manifesting vaccine hesitancy — might not even take a safe and effective COVID vaccine once it does arrive.

A good deal of this idiocy can be attributed, of course, to Donald Trump, who has been ignoring and downplaying the virus since its arrival. His willful ignorance and negligence has cost us hundreds of thousands of lives and will likely cost us hundreds of thousands more before all is said and done.

Hopefully Trump will be jettisoned from office in a few days. The next administration may well need to pass and enforce stringent public health laws to compel mask wearing and social distancing.

If a third of Americans refuse to do the right thing by choice, then they need to be punished into doing it.

Dr. Kelly Anspaugh, Ada
