Letter: Lest We Forget

In times of old, of knights, kings and queens, the bended knee was taken as recognition of a superior power and it was portrayed as a sign of subservience. It was meant as acknowledgement that the person exhibiting this demonstration was indeed prostrating himself before a superior being or ideal. If one was cognizant of certain religious protocol, they would find that the bending of the knee shows respect for the deity, and along with this act, homage to someone higher in rank or force much greater than self. This is one of the very reasons that our past must be remembered. We have too many in society who with no understanding of our history, disregard the good attributes of others.

I do believe the players of the field are aware of this information and they are indeed showing great respect for our national flag and beloved anthem. Kudos to the gladiators and knights of the past and present who, of long ago and now profess admiration and devout recognition of that before them. Whether the hand salute, crossing of the heart or bending of the knee is displayed, all seem to show deep respect which cannot be denied.

If this action is meant to promote another idea, it certainly fails to do so. If a true act of defiance is meant to be projected it would seem logical for the participants to quit the lucrative field of privilege and enter another occupation fortifying their position. True, it would not produce great monetary gain, but it would display great courage and conviction which is not noted here. Wasn’t this the object?
