Letter: Plenty of run taking part in 2020’s GISH

In times of turmoil and tribulations, it behooves us to take a step back, re-engage with our inner child, and once again perceive the joy around us. That’s why I am participating in this year’s GISH.

What is GISH, you ask? It stands for the Greatest International Scavenger Hunt. What it is is difficult to describe. Participants must pay a small fee, which is donated to charity. For this year, GISH was able to raise enough funds for one million meals for children who are underfed due to COVID-19.

That fee buys them access to the zaniest week of the year. Want to stage a tea party on the ceiling? Have an underwater birthday party, including blowing out the candles? You’ve come to the right place! Although initially it may seem like unreasonable pain and suffering, you’ll quickly find there are dozens of wacky adventures upon which to embark.

GISH also reminds us to find our resiliency during uncertainty, which is especially important in these troubling times. Many of the items on the list provide no background or additional information. For example, an item from a couple years ago is “Groucho Marx a piece of fruit.” But through creativity and tenacity we develop and implement solutions that surprise even ourselves. We will look back later and laugh” “It seemed like a good idea at the time!”

There are always several charitable activities on the list, as well, raising money or asking participants to volunteer for several wonderful causes. It’s silly, crazy fun for good causes that inspires and enriches us. There’s no down side!

Please consider joining us for next year’s GISH at gish.com.
