I agree with “Prosecution of girl outrageous” from Sunday, Aug. 2. A black female teen is becoming a scapegoat for the bad judgment and actions of a man old enough to be her father.
The charge involuntary manslaughter is totally unjust. It’s a huge deviation from the original charge of corrupting another with drugs. My heart goes out to Dino’s family, but some accountability must be borne by him for his actions. I grew up loving Dino as a young DJ. He loved music and was a nice, likable person.
Dino was known for partying and hanging with the young crowd. This teen should not bear the sole burden for his choice of lifestyle.
Blacks typically receive stiffer sentences, while their white counterparts receive minimal sentences for similar offenses. I do not want to see this happen to this teen. Black teens have been tried as adults and given 25-40 year sentences vs. a chance for rehabilitation. Yes, those who violate the law should bear the consequences of their actions, but the punishment should be just and equitable.
My heart is that this teen be tried fairly and not stereotyped. No censorship or suppression of known information should be allowed. The character/life of both parties should be presented.
My desire is not to hurt or humiliate anyone, but to ensure justice for this teen. We can no longer be silent about things that matter.
Proverbs 31:8-9: “Speak up for people who cannot speak for themselves. Help people who are in trouble. Stand up for what you know is right, and judge all people fairly. Protect the rights of the poor and those who need help.”
