National Police Week was established in 1962 by a joint resolution of Congress to give special recognition to law enforcement officers (LEOs), especially those who have “lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.” President Kennedy then designated May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls, as National Police Week.
During this week the organizations “Let’s Back the Blue” and “Light Ohio Blue” encourage all residents and businesses to show their support, respect, and appreciation for our hard working, dedicated LEOs through such visible signs as blue ribbons, yard signs and blue lights. In previous years the governor has ordered flags to be flown at half staff on May 15 for those who have lost their lives in the line of duty, and we fully expect him to make the same order again this year. We also encourage residents to send a note of appreciation to our law enforcement agencies including our police departments, our Sheriff’s department, and the local post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol. This year, because of COVID-19, our efforts will honor all first responders. A little recognition goes a long way!
