Legend has it that, during the Crimean War, a British soldier wrote home to his family, told them about a Russian officer who, praising the bravery of the British soldiers, characterized them as “lions commanded by donkeys.”
We are at war now. At war with coronavirus. Our frontline soldiers are the brave doctors and nurses who are literally risking their lives every day treating coronavirus patients. Doctors and nurses who are much more at risk than they should be, given that they do not have the PPE – protective gowns and masks – necessary to keep them safe from infection. As one public health expert put it, it is like sending soldiers into battle without armor.
Had Donald Trump listened to the experts around him who started sounding the alarm about coronavirus in January, our country could have been preparing for this onslaught, laying in a stockpile of protective gear. But Donald Trump doesn’t listen to experts. He only listens to the voice in his head telling him he’s the world’s foremost authority on everything.
Our doctors and nurses today are heroic warriors — many of who will fall in battle, making the ultimate sacrifice. They are lions indeed.
Too bad they are being led by a braying jackass.
