Letter: Shelia Haney deserved better

I was extremely sad to hear of the resignation of Shelia Haney, executive director of the Allen County Regional Transit Authority (RTA). Shelia led the successful effort last year to pass a levy that got the RTA back on solid financial ground and restored bus routes and other service. I had the honor of working as part of that effort. Shelia is incredibly knowledgeable and incredibly committed to public transit, her employees, and Allen County. She built a broad coalition of community support for public transit and did it all with warmth, humor, and grace.

I was concerned to read in Josh Ellerbrock’s Lima News article about her resignation that “immediately after winning the levy, the [ACRTA] board began to deliberate on Haney’s compensation for a number of months in executive session.” Shelia was a tremendous asset for this community and the ACRTA board had a responsibility to work hard to retain her.
