Letter: Assault rifles assault inteligence

Regarding the column by Jim Krumel, “Three men, three thoughts on gun control” in the Feb. 10 issue of The Lima News, I’ve heard the Larry Householder (Speaker of the Ohio House) argument so many times — the one that goes, “If he has an assault rifle, I want an assault rifle to defend myself.”

So, say, for example, you’re in a mall in Dayton and a guy cuts loose on the crowd with his assault rifle. I take it that you will have taken your assault rifle into the mall, will have it at the ready, and you’ll use it to gun down that one guy, and that you’ll be able to do that without hitting any bystanders.

It seems to me that, at best, what you could have at the ready is a concealed carry pistol (that you will be trained to use effectively), and that would work just fine to stop the carnage. (In fact, a concealed carry pistol has stopped a few mass shootings.)

Other than in war, please explain to me what an assault rifle has to do with defense. … I’ll wait.

James Cox, Van Wert
