This is the time of year when our local governments start stockpiling their salt for the winter.
Allen County has 47,000 tons in storage and ready for use. What I have always wondered is what happens to the salt after it is spread on our streets and washed down or storm sewers? Eventually, it makes its way into the rivers and then into Lake Erie.
Salt is a poison to our lakes and streams. Maybe the salt will eventually become strong enough to kill the algae bloom that has taken over the lake. Salt is full of chlorine and possibly could kill fish in the lake. If we decide to wait and see what its affect on the lake, we might see the fish floating on top of the water, which means we waited too long.
