Letter: Do you know your children?

Name one good reason why someone should have an assault rifle. I have always been pro 2nd amendment. People need to be able to protect themselves, be able to hunt. Why do you need an assault rifle to do that?

Assault rifles need to be restricted to military and law enforcement. (Although background checks and “no gun” lists have been very shamefully handled as of late.) Assault rifles have no place in gun shows/gun shops.

I’m all for what the students are doing in this matter. They have more sense than the politicians who cater to the gun lobby and Planned Parenthood’s war on the unborn.

Do you know where your children are at all times? My parents said of curfew, “you land in jail, you stay the night.” That was the easy part compared to when we got home.

Who are your children’s friends? Do you know what they are like? Do you know what their families are like? If the right atmosphere is not there, do you have the courage to break up the friendship and tell your child why? (I assure you they won’t be scarred for life.) What video games, movies, books and TV shows do they see?

Do your spend time with them every day, even if it’s just a kiss good night? Do you help them with their homework, have them show you it’s all done? If you can’t help, do you find someone who can? Are brothers and sisters encouraged to help each other?

Are their enforced rules and consequences in the house? Do you teach them how to conduct themselves like ladies and gentlemen before they go out in public?

My two sisters and I thought my parents were from the stone age. Later in life we all said, “Boy, you sure got smarter.”

Take this a step further. A saint from Calcutta who walked among us said, “How can you have peace on earth if you don’t have peace in the home?”
