Letter: Beware of charity with similar name

The Ohio Attorney General has accused an organization named “Cops for Kids” of bilking ohio citizens of millions of dollars. The Fraternal Order of Police, Lima Lodge No. 21 applauds the attorney general for exposing such fraud. We want to assure people that The F.O.P. is in no way connected to this so-called charity.

The F.O.P. created a charity “FOP Cops and Kids” several years ago that all FOP Lodges nationwide can use for charitable fund raising. Locally, our FOP Lodge also has a charity. We are incorporated through the State of Ohio and have IRS 501(c)(3) status. Our charity’s primary focus is on children. In addition to our annual FOP Cops and Kids shopping, we support Special Olympics and the Allen County Junior Fair among others.

Except for expenses for accounting services and incorporation fees, all money raised goes toward the activities we support. None of the trustees of the charity receive any compensation for administering the funds.
