Letter: Cyclists on sidewalks

Why does the city or other entities spend money on making a bicycle lane or path on the city streets?

On Tuesday, while I was out shopping, I was waiting on a traffic light at Elizabeth and High streets. I observed two separate male bicyclists riding down the sidewalk. The one was riding south on the east side of Elizabeth Street and turned onto High Street and continued eastward on the sidewalk. Then I saw the other coming fairly fast from the east on High Street on the north side sidewalk. There was a parking enforcement officer walking south on Elizabeth and I thought that she might get hit by the biker if they got to the intersection at the same time, since neither one could see the other, I figured an accident was about to happen. Sure enough they arrived at that time, the officer went to turn the corner to go west, and it startled her some, she jumped and the biker turned north onto Elizabeth and continued north on the sidewalk.

If that would have been an elderly person, they may not have reacted as quickly as this younger person did. So watch out while your walking in the downtown area, you might be next, especially at blind corner intersections.
