Letter: Transportation fills a need

Almost 50 years ago, at the age of 36, I was diagnosed with a rare eye disease called PXE. Because of this condition, I lost my central vision, which resulted in me no longer being able to drive.

Approximately 15 years ago my wife and I started to attend the Starlight Group in Lima, which is sponsored by the Lima Lions Club. The group meets once a month and includes a meal along with presentations that are beneficial to individuals with visual impairments. Over the years, a group of Putnam County residents traveled together to these meetings. Approximately 7 years ago we lost our group transportation. That is when one of our members contacted the Council on Aging to see if they would be willing to take us to our meetings and they graciously agreed to do so. The entire group looks forward to these monthly meetings and everyone is appreciative for the Council on Aging’s transportation services, especially since we can all ride together.

My wife, Delores, also uses the Council on Aging’s transportation program for some of her doctor appointments. Even though Delores still drives, there are times when she is unable to do so. Both Dolores and I are thankful for the Council on Aging’s assistance. We feel Putnam County is fortunate to have these worthwhile services. That is why we are asking you to please vote yes for the council on Aging Replacement Levy on Nov. 7 because you never know when you may need a little extra assistance.
