Letter: Portman needs to voice opinion

The death toll from the tragic massacre in Las Vegas was so high in part because the gunman used a “bump stock,” an accessory which essentially converts a semi automatic weapon into an automatic weapon. Automatic weapons are restricted by federal law, and bump stocks should be illegal.

Concern about bump stocks is bipartisan: Republicans have introduced legislation in Congress banning bump stocks, and the National Rifle Association agrees that they are problematic.

Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown has already announced his support for banning bump stocks, but Senator Rob Portman has not taken a position. I hope that he, too, will uphold the law and protect constituents by supporting a ban on bump stocks.
