Letter: Value of man determined by more than his wealth

On June 22, Donald Trump stated that he only wanted rich people working within his administration.

He went on to say that he loved all people, rich or poor, but in his administration, he only wanted the best of minds, as if to say only the rich have creative minds.

I let that thought meander into my past along with so many of Mr. Trump’s past assumptions, conclusions and misstatements, hoping that in the past is where they would always remain.

On July 21, I watched with interest the latest press briefing, in which Anthony Scaramucci accepted the position as the new communications director for the Trump administration (before later leaving it). Nothing unusual or substantial occurred during that press briefing until I heard him say, ”I hope Sean Spicer can go out and make a lot of money in the private sector.”

That statement made me think back to what Donald Trump said on June 22 and how making lots of money appears to be the driving force in determining the the personal value of an individual. In simpler terms, if you don’t have money, move to the back.

I would offer a different perspective when I think of people like Pat Tillman, the now-deceased former Arizona Cardinal football player who walked away from a $3.8 million contract and joined the military to do his part in the fight against terrorism. As a result of that self-sacrificing act of patriotism, Pat lost his life in Afghanistan.

Those are the kinds of people that have real value, Mr. Trump, those who are willing to sacrifice for the good of others and not those who have big pockets and small minds like yours, sir.

Charles Thomas
