Letter: Tom’s foolery view of climate change

In a recent column Thomas J. Lucente stated that “you only read about climate change is the scientific consensus, which is absolutely not true.”

Yes it is true.

The way to determine scientific consensus is to read peer reviewed published scientific articles. This literature from all over the world is indexed in the Web of Science, available to anyone for free from the OSU Lima library or classroom computers. This analysis has been done for the years 2013 and 2014 by James Powell (jamespowell.org), who was appointed to the National Science Board by Presidents Reagon and George H. W.Bush.

Powell searched for the key words “climate change,” “global warming,” and “global climate change.” Powell found 24,210 peer reviewed articles from those years, of which five either said evidence does not support global warming or that such warming is occurring but is not largely the result of human activity. Thus 99.994 percent of the published research from 2013/14 suggests human caused global warming is happening. This is a scientific consensus!
