Failure of system has consequences

I agree with the Jan. 27 letter from Larry Young about free welfare, food stamps and housing needing to be monitored closer. This is a necessary program that’s not meant for freeloaders. The recipients should be monitored more closely to avoid misuse.

Permitting other people to take advantage of the situation usually leads to trouble. We had a great-grandson put into this situation with the boyfriend moving in with the mother who had custody of the child. The child, a baby of 17 months, was beaten to death by the boyfriend who should not have been there in the first place. This innocent child did not deserve such terrible treatment.

This system needs to be checked out more closely to avoid the innocent children paying the ultimate penalty.
