Letter: Allen County Fair tradition broken

Kudos to Tim Ludwig for his recent letter to the editor. I am glad that I am not the only one that feels just like he does about changing the fair parade. As long as I can remember, the fair parade has always been on the Saturday following the opening of the fair. And the parade route has always been starting at the original Lima Senior High School and going to Kibby to Main to High street.

Don Klingler, former fair manager, and Jay Begg, former manager, both had the fair parade on Saturday morning. They didnt feel the need to change the fair parade. Now, since we have a new fair manager, he feels the need to come in and really mess with all the years the fair parade has been like it is — not only changing the parade route and date, but what about not throwing candy from the floats?

What’s a parade for other than to throw candy to all those people that are setting there watching the parade? How are they supposed to enjoy the parade with bubbles being blown? Children of all ages enjoy getting candy thrown at their feet. Now floats are not allowed to throw candy? I would say hundreds, perhaps a few thousand people, line the old parade route year after year and now someone comes in decides to change what others have grown accustomed too. Not a good way to start out.

I totally agree with what Mr. Ludwig said: “I can’t stand people who kill tradition because tradition comes first always and progress comes last if it ever comes at all.”
