Letter: Don’t mess with fair’s tradition

As we get ready for another great Allen County Fair run, I ask the question: “Who had the brilliant idea to move the fair parade to a Sunday afternoon? Also, who were the week sisters who caved in to the city and changed the parade route? Whoever did this needs their head examined.

The Allen County Fair Parade is an event that is to be run on Saturday morning only! No exceptions! No excuses! I’m 54 and it has been this way since I was a kid. I have been an active participant in the fair parade with the Browns Backers kicking a Pittsburgh Steeler helmet the entire route and I helped carry the American flag when I was in Cub Scouts.

Also, the parade route should always start at the real Lima Senior location on Pierce Street. That starting point gave the Allen County Fair Parade a traditional uniqueness. It’s a shame that Mr. Fricke showed a lack of intestinal fortitude and caved to the city to start the parade just like everybody else.

Yawn!

Let’s all hope that in 2017 Mr. Fricke and the fair board put the parade back where it belongs on a Saturday morning. If they need to start the parade on Saturday at 4 p.m. instead of Friday so be it. I can’t stand people who kill tradition because tradition comes first always and progress comes last if it ever comes at all.
