Letter: Focus on mourning after Orlando ordeal

Christine Flowers, in her Lima News column (June 14, 16), “Reactions to shooting predictable,” congratulates herself for (correctly) predicting seven ideologically-motivated responses to the dreadful Orlando slaughter. “I’m sick of them all,” she writes. “What happened to the days when deaths were mourned and fingers pointed afterward?”

As Michael Gerson wrote, in another column, “We are all… seeking to plant ideologies in the place of horror, for our [own] political benefit.” Our immediate response should be, as Gerson writes, “to imagine both the last terrible moments of unjustly shortened lives, and the pain…of those they left behind.”

That’s enough.

Finger pointing later.
