Letter: Student shares his view of Allen East

My name is Evan Stover and I am a senior at Allen East. On March 15th, Allen East conducted a board meeting in which almost 150 members of our community attended to voice their opinions. The rest of the meeting was aimed at attempting to sway the community into believing our administration has done wonderful job the past 2½ years. They presented everyone with a list of 21 things they have done to improve our school as a whole.

My question: Where’s the opposite side? Where is the statement to the public about our long time teacher, friend, and mentor, Mr. Dellifield? Why can the school afford to hire another principal, yet can’t afford to give the teachers a raise?

During the last three years our school has fallen off the side of a cliff. More than 10 great teachers to resigned, our school report card has tanked, and our student drug problem has skyrocketed.

At a board meeting last year, the teachers union took a vote of no confidence in the board because of their continuous support of the superintendent. I, and many others, also have no confidence in a board that supports Mel Rentschler. Anyone who can say to the media that the resignation of Mr. Dellifield is about “talking about adult decisions, therefore, I’m not going to sit with a child and discuss an adult decision,” is someone who has no care for the students of his school.

I am asking that the board — Russ King, Brian Hershberger, Kevin Dues, Brad Richardson, and Geri Ewing — to either stop supporting Mel Rentschler, or resign from your position. You are hurting those you have vowed to serve.
