Letter: Series brings back memories

I want to commend The Lima News for its “Lima in Black and White” series. You did an excellent job in covering issues in what I thought was an unbiased view of this issue in Lima. The picture of the child’s eyes was the best!

Now saying that, let me tell you I am a 62-year-old white, female registered nurse. My dad had Ryan’s market on the south end. A family grocery store that was front and center of a lot of historical black history in this town (three generations of Ryan’s managed this store). As a nurse I heard more than once “You are Sonny’s daughter! Your daddy did a lot for us in the south end.” Sonny is my dad and I was always proud of those comments. He gave credit in town when no one else was. Credit meant keeping a little log book of IOU’s when folks had to wait for their check to come in to buy groceries. Most of that generation is gone now along with my father’s grocery store.

Once again, thank you for the great commentary! Great read!
