Letter: Elections must include young, Black voters

I am writing to address a critical issue that is plaguing our society and impacting our children and youth. We are currently reaping what we have been sowing, and no one is excluded from the consequences of our actions. Our negligence and lack of involvement in important matters have led to a situation where our children and youth are suffering.

During the recent election, it was disheartening to see only a limited number of Black votes cast. This lack of participation reflects a broader trend of apathy and disengagement among the community. We only show up to city council meetings when it’s a special event or when our friends are running for office. We are failing to actively participate in shaping the future for our children.

Furthermore, we are guilty of lying to our children about simple and basic things, creating a culture of secrecy and mistrust. Our children are aware of the secrets we keep and the hypocrisy in our actions, leading to a sense of anger and betrayal among them. They are speaking out and demanding change, and we must listen to their voices.

It is crucial that we do not dismiss young people as rebellious troublemakers but instead give them a chance to express themselves and contribute positively to society. We must provide coaching, mentoring and opportunities for them to get involved in decision-making processes. It is not enough to leave it up to a select few or to suffocate those who are solely for show.

We need to start involving our young people in everything, from community initiatives to political discussions. We must break the cycle of generational curses and ensure that our children do not inherit the mistakes of the past. It is time to empower our youth and nurture their potential to create a better future for all.
