Real Wheels: ‘Beauty queen’ still excites him — 1957 Nomad a ‘sports wagon’

LIMA – Pick a car.

That’s a decision Phil Steiner has fun making.

Would he rather drive his 1959 Corvette, or his 1957 Chevrolet Nomad wagon?

His answer may surprise you.

The 81-year-old Lima man has owned the Corvette for 62 years and the Nomad for 52 years, so it’s not an easy decision. Both are in A-1 excellent condition. While the Corvette solicits more oohs and ahhs at car shows, Steiner said the Nomad offers more creature comforts.

Thus, the Nomad more often is his pick to cruise town.

“The Nomad has more room and is a smoother ride,” said Steiner.

It is also outfitted with air-conditioning, power steering and power front disc brakes, which he says “will stop you on a dime and give you 80 cents in change.”

The Nomad has been branded “The Beauty Queen of all Station Wagons” by General Motors. Its two-door design sees it standing out from other wagons as does its unique two-piece high-mounted tailgate and chrome detailing.

Steiner’s wagon is one of only 6,534 two-door Nomad wagons produced by Chevrolet in 1957. It was the last year of a three-year production cycle for the two-door wagon.

Steiner’s 1959 Corvette, which was featured on Aug. 19 in Real Wheels, is part of the first generation of Corvettes. Only 9,670 Corvettes, all convertibles, were produced that year.

“Both cars are part of a special era of automobiles,” Steiner said. “That’s what I like.”
