Gordon kicks off campaign for city council president

LIMA — Several community members of Lima gathered together Tuesday evening in hopes of ushering in new leadership. First Ward Councilor Todd Gordon kicked off his campaign to run for city council president. Gordon will be on the ballot in November running against Fifth Ward Councilor Jamie Dixon. Many community members joined Gordon’s campaign kickoff to rally with the candidate and share who he would be if elected.

”God gave me two words (about Todd) as I was praying this morning,” Steve Doyle said. “The first word was integrity — sound leadership is founded on integrity. The second word is the word truthful.”

Doyle among others shared their experiences with Gordon and why they plan to support him. While speaking, Gordon recalled what he currently sees in Lima and what he hopes it will become.

“God is moving in Lima,” Gordon said. “If you are driving down the street on a Saturday night, all the parking spaces are full. Well, not that long ago it was dead down there. God is changing things and he is putting people in place.”

Gordon also spoke on the diversity he noticed at his event and how he hopes to continue to bring community members together regardless of political stance or ethnic background.

Current Council President John Nixon announced he would not be seeking re-election last November.

”I have been on city council for 10 years now,” Gordon said. “When Mr. Nixon is done (with his term) the council member who has been there the longest will be Derry Glenn. I just figured it was the right time to lead.”

Gordon also shared the various roles he has played in the community and how he hopes to continue to serve in a greater capacity.

”I believe leaders should be positive,” Gordon said. “I want to lead us into a new culture and a new era. I want to be a part of what helps us grow and helps us to believe in ourselves. I want to help my grandchildren have a great place to live.”
