Roses and Thorns

Who wouldn’t like to receive a handful of roses on a Sunday morning?

Rose: To the 10 local winners of the Jefferson Awards, including Joyce Buss, of Kalida; Kyleigh Engle, of Wapakoneta; Isabella Etzkorn, of Lima; Luann Everett, of Cridersville; Deb Helser, of Lima; Charlotte Howbert, of Lima; James “Eddie” Monfort; Michael Ritchie, of Lima; James Slough, of Findlay; and Aaron David Spar, of Ada. We look forward to sharing your individual stories in the coming weeks, and we’re grateful for your willingness to help others.

Thorn: To David Cowan III, who was found guilty of two counts of rape, one count of unlawful sexual misconduct with a minor and one count of gross sexual imposition involving his girlfriend’s 14-year-old foster daughter. He shouldn’t have put the girl through the original ordeal or the stress of reliving it on the witness stand during a trial.

Rose: To Ottawa-Glandorf’s Colin White and St. Marys’ Austin Parks, who were each named player of the year for the Ohio Prep Sportswriters Association All-Northwest Ohio boys basketball teams. Parks won in Division II, and White won in Division III. Both top-level talents treated area fans to some great basketball this year.

Rose: To Tara Reynolds-Bales, an Allen County native who’s returning to the area to serve as the executive director of the Lima/Allen County Regional Planning Commission. We look forward to seeing her contributions to plotting the future for the area.

Thorn: To Mother Nature, for that cruel joke of snow on the ground Friday morning. We Ohioans are tough, but we’ll never appreciate snow in March.
