BMV to refund disabled veterans over license plate mistake

COLUMBUS —The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles will issue refunds to disabled veterans who should have received specialty license plates free, but were instead charged.

The BMV said in an announcement that it found out that a change in Ohio law should have allowed it, but that the bureau did not implement it. Almost 2000 individuals have been mistakenly charged for the license plates since Oct. 2019 when the law became official.

Over the next month, the BMV said that it expects to process refunds averaging $60, with variances accounted for based on fees and taxes, for all the veterans who were affected.
