Job fair matches job-seekers, employers

LIMA — The third and final day of MakerFest included a big job fair that was open to the public on Saturday.

People were able to visit with representatives of local companies that need positions filled now or in the future.

OhioMeansJobs hosted the event at the Veterans Memorial Civic and Convention Center.

“We’re open as a full-service job center to people that may need their résumé tuned up or do online applications,” said Joe Patton, assistant manager for OhioMeansJobs.

The event included dozens of opportunities for the job-seekers.

“We have over 100 employers here. We kind of have a map of what’s available in what positions, we separate it by business sectors like health care, financial, manufacturing after that we’ll get you turned out to our employers and hopefully get you the recipe for success,” Patton said.

Kevin Devita, a Lima native, is a recent graduate from the University of Findlay and has been searching for work in his field for four months.

“I think it’s a good program that they implemented for the Lima community,” Devita said.

He’s hoping to get in with any of the larger companies in the Lima region.

“Ford, they’re a well-known company, Honda, Whirlpool, I’m pretty much open right now,” he said.

Many people think that you have to leave the Lima area to find work. Patton said there are plenty of good opportunities right here.

“We’re blessed in Allen County to have global companies. We have two major health care operations with Mercy Health and Lima Memorial and then we have global companies like Potash, Husky, Ford, Proctor & Gamble and Metokote or PPG has one of their global operations here,” Patton said.

For those who missed the job fair as part of MakerFest, they can stop in to the OhioMeansJobs office on South Dixie Highway in Lima.

“Step in, utilize OhioMeansJobs whenever you get a chance. We work with all of these companies and we kind of have the Golden Ticket to get you in. They give us the information to what they want and job coaches can help train you up or help train you up or help you tweak your résumé to get you to the stop of the stack,” Patton said.
