Lima water line breaks for the second time in 2 months

LIMA — The same water line that “blew up pavement” during a break in July had repair crews returning to it after a break Monday morning, causing West Market Street to be reduced by one lane in the vicinity of the National Bank building near Town Square.

According to Utilities Director Michael Caprella, the second break in the 8-inch line is due to the aging infrastructure in the city’s water distribution system.

“It’s similar to the one we had a month ago, just a different section,” he said. “It’s in a different section, not too far from where it broke originally. It’s just old pipe.”

Despite the break, water was maintained to all area businesses, according to Caprella.

“Everything’s looped in the whole downtown area,” he said. “We can isolate one small section and everybody else still has water because of the valving we have.”

While the break itself was not severe, Caprella said, the fact that it was along the street made effecting repairs more difficult.

“We’ll put a band on it, but when it’s on the edge of the street, there’s a lot of stuff that has been put in over the years,” he said. “They may dig through brick, concrete and everything else. It’s not like digging in a grassy area off the right of way.”

Caprella estimated that repairs would be completed by the end of the day Monday.
